Configuring Mozilla for use with Secure POP

Note, this applies specifically to version 1.0 Release Candidate 2. Your mileage will vary as you get farther from this version.

First, start the email reader and then select Edit->Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings..." from the drop down menu. This is a change from previous versions of Netscape in that you can only access this menu item from within the mail application.

Next, enter the name of the server as "r2d2.cwru.edu". If you don't use this exact name, the secure negotiation will fail with a "Security Error: Domain Name Mismatch" error.  Now, select the "Use secure connection (SSL)" checkbox. The port number should change to 995. Fill out the rest of the form as you require.

Note: I have found different reactions to using different versions of r2d2 for the server name. In general, using r2d2.cwru.edu always worked best.
Using r2d2 seems to generate the Domain Name Mismatch error the very first time, but then works without complaint after that; using r2d2.cwru.edu always works without error; while using r2d2.eeap.cwru.edu causes the Domain Name Error each time you restart mozilla and check your mail.

Now check your mail, you should receive an error box "Website Certified by an Unknown Authority". You can view the certificate if you think you might actually not be talking to r2d2 (it should match the image below) and then select the "Remember this certificate permanently" box. Lastly, press the continue button.

This completes the procedure. You should now be able to securely download your email from r2d2.
